A Gift From the Friary

The Monk was leaving again. He had a small bundle, a smaller list, and the look of a man who intended to pretend this was not a farewell.

As was tradition in the Friary, he never gave things casually. Every object he pressed into a pilgrim's hands had a reason that outlasted the moment. Before he went, he set out the few he would leave behind for the people who had made the road better.

The Illuminated Margins Sticker Sheet came first, because it was the smallest, and the smallest is sometimes right. He had always kept little drawings in his pockets for children and old men who needed something to look at. These are the margins of the sacred texts, made portable. To receive one is to be told that someone thought of you in passing, and meant it.

Next, the Sanctum Flame Candle. The Monk lit one before every act of thinking. Not for light, since the room was perfectly adequate. For the ritual of beginning. He held that starting is its own act, and that most people forget this until someone reminds them with a small flame.

Then the Ale & Wisdom Glass. The tavern, the Monk said, was where the real conversations happened. Not because of the ale, but because the table was low, the seat was soft and no one was in a hurry. This glass is for the friend who already knows that, and who will be quietly pleased to be seen.

The Cushion of Contemplation he set down with some ceremony. Rest, in the Friary, is not a reward. It is a practice. The person who has never been told to simply sit deserves something comfortable to sit on, and the permission that comes with it.

The Hermit's Hearth Beanie was last. The Monk had spent cold nights on open roads without complaint. Not because he was tough, but because he was warm, and he had never been embarrassed to say so. This is warmth as a gift, offered without ceremony, which is the only way warmth was ever meant to be offered.

He looked over the small collection and nodded, the way he nodded at a loaf that had risen properly.

One gift remained, and it cost nothing. The Monk always said the best thing you could give a person was a place where they belonged without having to explain themselves. The Friary Wall is that place. The door is open, and the order is small.

Then he shouldered his bundle, mislaid his staff, found it again, and went out into the road, wobbling slightly, as intended.
